Under 16 – Match Report

Our U16s travelled to Hibs today and despite the narrow defeat, the lads can hold their heads high after a superb second-half comeback and a performance full of heart, grit, and real football.

Hibs started brightly and enjoyed a spell of possession early on. We were solid defensively, but after 15 minutes the hosts broke the deadlock with a tidy finish from a tight angle. Five minutes later they added a second, and at 2–0 down the boys could easily have folded — but instead it sparked them into life.

Half-time came with work to do, and whatever was said in that dressing room worked. The lads came roaring out of the blocks in the second half, showing real character. Pressing higher, winning second balls, and taking the game to Hibs, they got their reward with two goals in quick succession — first from Darragh Hearne, who finished brilliantly to get us back into it, and then from Markel Bañeros Carrascosa, who reacted quickest in the box to fire home the equaliser.

From there it became a thriller — end-to-end stuff with both sides going for the win. Crystal looked the more likely at spells, and the momentum was firmly with us as the clock ticked into added time.

But football can be cruel, and deep into injury time Hibs snatched a goal at the back post to make it 3–2, denying our lads what would have been a fully deserved point.

Despite the result, there was immense pride in the performance. Coming from two goals down away shows the character and spirit in this squad, and on another day they walk away with all three points.
