Under 16 – Match Report

The lads made the trip to Villa this morning and produced a composed and clinical performance to come away with a deserved three points, in a game that swung firmly in Crystal’s favour after a strong finish to the first half.

The match began as a tight and cagey affair, with both sides feeling each other out on the astro surface and chances were at a premium. Villa struck first, taking the lead with a direct free kick from the right wing that caught Aaron out and went straight into the net.

To their credit the lads responded well and gradually began to assert themselves, and their pressure was rewarded on 35 minutes with a moment of real quality. Leo picked up the ball and unleashed a screamer, curling his shot into the top right-hand corner to level the contest in spectacular fashion.

Just on the stroke of half time, we turned the game on its head. Aaron O Toole and Markel put Villa under serious pressure as they attempted to play out from the back, forcing a loose ball to fall kindly to Leo. Showing great composure, he drove his effort into the bottom right corner to give us a 2–1 lead going into the break.

Two changes were made at half time, with Mo introduced on the right wing and immediately causing problems with his energy and direct running. There was also a debut in goal for David, though he had very little to do as Crystal completely dominated the second half.

The third goal arrived when Aaron showed excellent control to bring down a lovely floated ball over the top before calmly slipping it under the advancing goalkeeper to make it 3–1. We continued to press, with Leo going close to completing his hat-trick but firing just over the bar.

Late on, we were very unlucky not to be awarded a penalty when Markel was taken down in the box, but the referee opted to blow for full time instead.

A strong all-round performance and a fully deserved victory sees us pick up three valuable points, leaving us level on points with Ferrybank, with a game in hand.
